Quick Kitchen Reno
Kitchen renos are generally expected to cost a lot of money. But here’s an example of a beautiful transformation for very little outlay. The biggest change was the butcher block top for the island and the white subway tile backsplash. Otherwise, the cabinets were freshened-up with a coat of Chantilly Lace (white) paint, the walls with Stonington Gray, and the island made far more dramatic with a Rainstorm (blue-green) paint upgrade (yes, we painted-out the natural wood!). Add four modern barstools and you have a brand new, updated kitchen that’s sure to please!
Simple Transformation
Often, transforming a room can be as simple as updating a few items. This dining area was given a dramatic upgrade by simply adding modern dining chairs and a more balanced centerpiece, creating a pleasing contrast with the dark, rustic dining table which was retained. The final setting becomes an inviting transitional dining space.
Man-Cave to Coastal
Leather sofas are popular because they’re comfortable and… manly. Occupied homes naturally accumulate layers over time and rooms adapt to daily living rather than presentation — which only makes sense. The goal of design, then, is to re-introduce intention over accumulation. This home shows a striking transformation, borrowing from the Toronto harbour to create a southern coastal vibe in the heart of the city.
Drama vs Calm
While the black and white contrast of the ‘before’ room can feel more dramatic for some, a more finished, inviting space is created with lighter-toned furniture and window treatments, the use of glass-topped coffee and side tables, and thoughtful use of art and rug.
The magic of scale
Empty rooms are often deceiving… they look smaller. Notice how large-scale art and a sectional sofa (!) create an appealing living space that doesn’t appear over-crowded.
Smaller spaces...
… can accommodate a lot of living with well-scaled furniture that offers a lighter visual footprint (i.e. glass table with pedestal base, paired coffee tables with wrought iron bases, styled walnut veneer accent chair).
